Artist's Description

Painting an old corrugated cardboard box and a piece of fruit did not sound like a very exciting task to me, but it was never-the-less an assignment in my watercolor class I was taking, so I began my painting. I actually learned that there were a lot of intricacies to a box and an orange that I had not really thought about. The lesson I learned for my painting was that observation skills are very valuable to a painter and can make all the difference in whether a painting resonates with the viewer or not. As I sought to see more and more in that box and orange, what I actually saw was that it would be a challenge either way...to do a painting that would replicate the details in detail or to do a representational painting that made recognizable generalizations instead. Or maybe the best way to go would be to do a combination of the two? Problem solved, and an A grade.

After 32 years of teaching elementary school, I decided to retire. Just prior to my retirement, I took a few watercolor classes at Shasta College to see if all the "desire" to paint that had been waiting patiently for its turn in my busy life could materialize into something that would represent my best efforts to replicate the beauty I see in the world. I wanted to share it in such a way that people would want to "take the closer look" and further appreciate the world and creation around us. In the first two years, I produced 20 paintings and framed them all with the encouragement of my husband (who doubles as my easily available art critic).
