Just a short snowshoe walk from our cabin on a cloudy winter day in the mountains of Northern California, I encountered a mule deer doe and her fawn grazing on the few plants that were barely exposed above the level of the snow on the ground. They seemed oblivious to my presence, so in an effort to get their attention for my photo, I began to meow like a cat, which did cause the doe to look up at me and listen intently with her ear outstretched, as you can see included in the painting. The intensity of her expression, the contrast of the soft fur of the deer with the rough wood branches of the pine tree they were standing under provided my priorities for the painting.
After 32 years of teaching elementary school, I decided to retire. Just prior to my retirement, I took a few watercolor classes at Shasta College to see if all the "desire" to paint that had been waiting patiently for its turn in my busy life could materialize into something that would represent my best efforts to replicate the beauty I see in the world. I wanted to share it in such a way that people would want to "take the closer look" and further appreciate the world and creation around us. In the first two years, I produced 20 paintings and framed them all with the encouragement of my husband (who doubles as my easily available art critic).
