Description
My home-away-from-home is an area in the Plumas National Forest, CA. and location of many a family vacation as I was growing up. My husband and I still frequent the area regularly, and I am still finding new treasures to photograph and paint every time we visit. On this occasion a few years ago, we had just found this waterfall, known as Gray Eagle Creek Waterfall for the first time. I loved the rugged rock formations and old waterwheel that was a part of the scene. The waterfall itself was powerful but as the water ran downstream, the power was diffused into large calm pools, providing an interesting contrast. The warm afternoon light found its way through the dense forest and illuminated the falls and nearby boulders and rocks even underwater, providing a feeling of tranquility as being in nature often does. Mule deer are the local residents of the area, and a warm day such as that one was enough to make anyone thirsty. The painting was done in very detailed sections, as I attempted to replicate those elements creating the mood of the place. I titled the piece after my husband's favorite hymn, "As the Deer Panteth for the Water So My Soul Longeth after Thee", because of the closeness I feel with my Creator in His wondrous creation.
